Haleakala National Park Service Trip
Want to see spectacular views at 7,000 feet, watch rare native birds and save unique ecosystems found nowhere else on the planet? Come to Haleakala National Park. Pacific Whale Foundation will host a group of volunteers to pull invasive pine trees and enjoy a picnic lunch afterwards at Hosmer Grove. Join the growing worldwide trend of "voluntourism" by participating in the Volunteering on Vacation program offered by Pacific Whale Foundation with support from the County of Maui Office of Economic Development and the Hawaii Tourism Authority. In exchange for your efforts, you'll receive a Volunteering on Vacation t-shirt and the satisfaction of joining in efforts to protect Maui's unique environment. Warm clothes, long pants and closed-toed shoes are required. Bring water and lunch to enjoy at Hosmer Grove afterwards. Participants get to experience the park for free. Transportation is provided. Moonlight Tidepool Exploration
Brittle stars, urchins, octopi, oh my! Pacific Whale Foundation’s marine educators invite the public to meet some of the fascinating creatures that roam Hawaii’s tidepools at night during our Moonlight Tidepool Explorations. Check in time is 6:15, event runs from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at a South Maui tidepool. This discovery event is recommended for people ages 6 and over. Participants are asked to wear sturdy shoes and bring a flashlight. Refreshments will be provided. $10 per adult and $5 per child. Advance reservations required. Co-sponsored by Mana Kai Maui Resort. SeaWees - Ocean Ed-venture Fun for Preschoolers
Calling all preschoolers and their parents/caregivers! Join Pacific Whale Foundation’s marine educator Merrill Kaufman in exploring the marine environment through field trips, hands-on activities, songs and stories. Our SeaWees program takes place at Pacific Whale Foundation’s Discovery Center at The Harbor Shops at Ma‘alaea (next to Maui Ocean Center). Our program is organized around themes that run for five classes. Join us for single classes or all five classes in each session. Our upcoming session runs on Oct. 22, 29 and Nov. 5, 12, 19. The theme: “Shallow, Deep, Deepest.” Dive below the waves from sun-drenched reefs to deep thermal vents to discover how ocean animals adapt to the pressure of life in the sea. Free Talk with the Kaho'olawe Island Reserve Commission
Members of the Kaho’olawe Island Reserve Commission (KIRC) will present this talk on “The Kaho’olawe Island Resources Management Program – Researching the (Former) Target Island’s Marine Environment” as part of Pacific Whale Foundation’s monthly Making Waves lecture series. Ocean Resource Specialists Cheryl King and Jennifer Vander Veur, Volunteer Coordinator Jackson Bauer, and Public Information Officer Ellen Pelissero will discuss the restoration of the island and protection of its numerous resources. With our partner, Maui Coastal Land Trust and group leader Scott Fisher, you’ll visit a remarkable coastal area that’s rich in Hawaiian history and bird watching. It’s also home to some of Maui’s last sand dunes. You’ll help to remove invasive species and clear brush and weed. Honokawai Valley Restoration
Want to see archaeological sites of old Hawaii? Come to Honokowai Valley every Saturday from 9 am to about 5 pm. Ed Lindsey will host a group of volunteers to restore Honokowai Valley. Volunteers will uproot invasive plant species in Honokowai Valley, and may also plant indigenous plants. They will get a chance to work in sometimes wet and sunny conditions. Sun protection, long pants and closed boots are required. Bring water and snacks. Participants get to experience a private valley full of archaeological sites.
